Why has socialism been so bad?

The power to control and redistribute a person's wealth and property can only be achieved with a government so powerful that all checks and balances are eliminated. This can start out benign, but eventually some person or group will inevitably take advantage of it. The flaw in socialism is that the distributing of wealth has to pass through government first.
