Can I become a farmer without obtaining a college degree?
Are you thinking of growing this food for the sake of capital? If you would like to have a big production that is going to bring in some cash, I would probably take some classes, try to get some education. Most importantly, talk with seasoned farmers. That's going to be a huge source of information. Remember that a lot is going to boil down to trial and error. Look for farmers in many different settings. You can get great info from your dairy farming relatives but they may not be able to help you much with vegetable farming and the like. If you are thinking something small scale, the most important thing is research. You want to know what grows best in what soil and other conditions. There are a lot of good books you can purchase that can give you this info. It really depends on what type of production you want. If it is solely for the sake of capital you can't go wrong with dairy. Remember, the organic trend is growing as well. It would be well for the sake of the consumers and environment if you chose that route. Best of luck!
